Lethwei: The Potential of a Weekly Live Broadcast

June 26, 2020 by V Giordano Leave a Comment

Since the opening of the country, Lethwei has grown internationally on the back of newly formatted competitions aimed at a global audience. Its development of the sport has followed a very different trajectory than Thailand with Muay Thai, and Cambodia with Pradal Serey — sports that slowly built up over time to develop into what they are today.

Lethwei has taken much from the modern Muay Thai model, as it goes through a completely new revitalization as a form of fitness, a physical education program, and a fighting sport that is now being sold to men, women, and children around the world.

In this lightning-fast acceleration forward, one thing that has gotten lost in the shuffle is the weekly broadcast that has kept the sport in the eyes of public as it is simultaneously streamed to the world. In both Thailand and Cambodia, these broadcasts have produced many champions, who have built a large television following for themselves. The possible Myanmar show(s) could have the potential to provide financial support for the fighters, produce exciting matchups, and offer broadcast Championship belts that will provide incentive and serve as a bridge between the smaller rural shows, and the many largescale events held throughout the year.
